Both Sides of the Coin...
A Women's Perspective

July 2011

Zanesville, Ohio and vicinities
Click here to view the flyer

The 150th anniversary of the American Civil War is upon us.

The Civil War sesquicentennial (2011-2015) provides a fresh opportunity for a new generation to rediscover the many ways in which Ohio WOMEN played a key role in the war and in which the war – “this mighty scourge,” as Lincoln described it – changed life in Ohio.

The Civil War story in Ohio touches almost every community in the state. This tour is a place for those interested in its vast and fascinating history to come together around the anniversary of that time period.

Learn, feel and explore both sides of the Civil War era….. Union Side and Confederate Side and a woman’s life prior to and during the Civil War.

Highlights of your tour could include:

Prior to the Civil War women were entranced with drawing, dancing, singing, sewing, clothing and SOCIAL gatherings.

Civil War Ball - July 7, 2011 ONLY - Learn about 19th century American culture and etiquette, all while having a terrific time enjoying a score of different types of authentic period dances - ranging from waltzes to reels - all taught by a professional dance teacher and set to common 1800's tunes played by qualified musicians.

Dinner - July 8, 2011 will be replete with foods from the Civil War and a one hour open bar. (Cash bar following dance class).

WRAPPERS, GOWNS and DRESSES FASHION SHOW and HIGH TEA - The women's fashions featured in the fashion show date from just before the Civil War, 1858 and after its end, 1867, and are shown in chronological order. This beautiful fashion show of the era will be accompanied by HIGH Tea with foods of the time period.

Women in society were taught to conform to society's norms. All who could afford it aspired to attain the latest fashions.

Roscoe Village in Coshocton, Ohio A TYPICAL CIVIL WAR COMMUNITY OF THE 1860’s. Most women were affected by the war in some way. Some leapt into the war effort working for various organizations, including the Ladies Hospital Aid Society, the Union Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, and the United States Christian Commission.

Such efforts certainly attest to the idea that women fought the war in their own ways on the home front.

Guests will learn the life of WOMEN that went to work, administered to the soldiers, sold goods to the residents, sent supplies via canal, grew their own foods, tended to the orchards, plowed with horses and oxen.

Enjoy a tantalizing PRIVATE DINNER with the TROOPS along the river while being entertained PRIOR to the Union and Confederate NIGHT FIRING of CANNONS.

Attend a Civil War Reenactment interact with the soldiers located in their camps. The camp will be outfitted with infantry, cavalry, artillery, and medical equipment of the period.

Tour Historic Putnam known for their abolitionist founders. Guests will tour The Stone Academy one of the oldest buildings in Putnam. Built in 1809, and was the site of two conventions of the Ohio Abolition Society in 1835 and 1839.

Walk through the pages of history with an historian portraying on the most important figures in Ohio History.

Tour the Putnam Presbyterian Church and discover why Harriet Beecher Stowe was compelled to write “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”.

Cruise the Muskingham River aboard a Sternwheel Boat and see how the troops traveled and how supplies made it through some of oldest hand operated locks in the world.

All aboard the TRAIN RIDE TO FREEDOM! Participate in a 1 hour train ride with re-enactors.

During the rebellion, railroads became both strategic resources, as well as a military targets, precisely because they were strategic resources.

It was soon realized that the railroads would help to make or break the Union in this conflict which was so bloody that the combined total of all U.S. losses in all other wars would not equal the losses in that war.

Depending upon which direction groups will be coming from—additional add-on’s can and will be added to enhance “Both Sides of the Coin”.
